Cépages-AutoTest
Learn to recognize grape varieties, wine regions, and vineyard soils, one quiz at a time.
Cépages-AutoTest is a self-assessment quiz built on the same engine as
Certiphyto-AutoTest (Exygen's quizzy component: themed navigation,
per-answer correction, "review later" flagging, a quick 10-question quiz,
and a Learning/Exam mode). Unlike a hand-written quiz, every question here
is generated on the fly from a reference database of grape varieties and
wine regions, so the wrong answers change from one session to the next
instead of being memorized by heart.
- Identification — recognize a grape variety from its name or picture, among 3 wrong answers drawn at random from the rest of the database.
- Endemic French varieties — tell apart grape varieties native to France (e.g. Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau, Mondeuse, Négrette, Duras) from others.
- By country — one theme per country of origin (France, USA, other countries), generated automatically from the data — no theme to write by hand per country.
- By wine region — one theme per vineyard/region (Jura, Savoie, Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Val de Loire, Alsace, Vallée du Rhône, and others), generated the same way.
- By wine color — one theme per color (red, white, rosé...).
- Aromas and textures — match a grape variety to its typical aromas (dark fruit, cherry, spice, violet...) and mouthfeel (tannic, tangy, powerful...).
- Soils by vineyard — match a wine region to its characteristic soil types (e.g. blue and grey marl and limestone for the Jura).
The reference database currently covers 93 grape varieties (France, USA, and other countries, including 42 endemic French varieties) and 15 wine regions with their characteristic soils.
Why not a general-purpose AI instead?
Asking a chatbot "is this grape variety endemic to France?" or "what soil does this region have?" can produce plausible-sounding but wrong answers, with no way to check the source or track your own progress across sessions. Cépages-AutoTest draws its questions from a maintained reference dataset, keeps score per theme, lets you flag questions to revisit, and regenerates the wrong answers at every session — a repeatable, deterministic quiz loop a general-purpose chat conversation does not give you.
FAQ
Is a 100% score a guarantee I know all grape varieties? No — as with any self-assessment tool, it only means you answered correctly the questions asked in that particular session; a low score signals gaps worth reviewing.
Which grape varieties and regions are covered? 93 grape varieties (France, USA, other countries) and 15 wine regions (Jura, Savoie, Sud-Ouest, Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence, Vallée du Rhône, Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Val de Loire, Alsace, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, South America), each with its characteristic soils.
Do the wrong answers stay the same every time? No — distractors are drawn at random from the rest of the database on every session, so you cannot simply memorize a fixed set of wrong answers.
Is there a quick mode if I don't have much time? Yes, a 10-question quick quiz is available alongside the full themed quiz and the Learning/Exam mode.
